Construction is underway!

The new waterfront expansion and upgrade efforts continue! This month, Market staff have begun working on the replacement of the elevator and staircase that connects visitors between Pike Place Market and the Alaskan Way waterfront.

Construction on this project will run through May of 2023. Keep reading to learn more about what to expect and how to get around!

How to Get Around During the Closure

Construction on the waterfront elevator is expected to last approximately 8 months, and during this time, all visitors will use our Skybridge elevator to travel between Pike Place Market and the waterfront. Signage is placed along this route to help make wayfinding easy.

The Pike Place Market Parking Garage will remain open during construction and will always have elevators available during garage operating hours.

How to get to the Waterfront from Pike Place Market (Main Arcade)

Visitors wanting to visit the waterfront will use our Skybridge and Skybridge elevator to travel between Pike Place Market and the waterfront.

  • Go through the double doors to the left of Mick’s Peppourri and across the Skybridge. At the end of the bridge, you will find the Skybridge elevator.
  • Take the elevator to level 1 and follow signs throughout the garage that lead visitors to the Alaskan Way waterfront.

  • Find the Skybridge elevator entrance just past KUBODE in the plaza of Providence Heritage House at 1533 Western Avenue. Look for blue signs indicating the elevator entrance.

Project Details

In September, Market staff began replacing the elevator and staircase connecting visitors between Pike Place Market and the Alaskan Way waterfront. This elevator and staircase is located in the rear corner of our parking garage at 1531 Western Avenue.

The new elevator will travel faster between floors and be able to accommodate more people than the current elevator being replaced. We will also replace the current exterior stairs with a new wider staircase that lands at the new Alaskan Way sidewalk.

It is an exciting progressive step in the ongoing development to move visitors between the Market, our garage, the Seattle Aquarium, and the reimagined waterfront currently under construction.

Construction on this project will run through May of 2023.

Be sure to revisit this page, as we will provide ongoing updates throughout the construction process!
