Pike Place Market Names Rachel Ligtenberg as New Executive Director
A Visionary Leader for Community and Commerce, Ligtenberg to Lead the Operations and Management of the Nation’s Largest Continuously Operating Public Market
SEATTLE, WA (October 29, 2024) – After an extensive nationwide search, Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority (PDA) is proud to announce the appointment of Rachel Ligtenberg as its new Executive Director, effective November 1, 2024. A dynamic and visionary leader, Ligtenberg brings more than three decades of experience in both for-profit and non-profit sectors, making her uniquely qualified to lead the future of the world-famous Pike Place Market.
Background and Leadership Experience
Ligtenberg joins the PDA following an illustrious 30-year career with REI, where she held several leadership roles, including Vice President of Retail Operations. At REI, she spearheaded the growth of flagship stores, including the iconic Seattle location and flagships in New York City and Washington DC. Ligtenberg was also instrumental in the development of company-wide initiatives like #OptOutside, fostering deep connections between community and commerce. Most recently, she served as President of Sports and Outdoor and People and Culture at Netrush, where she led successful growth initiatives through innovative eCommerce strategies. Her ability to drive results while fostering healthy, purpose-driven organizational cultures makes her a natural fit for Pike Place Market, where tradition meets modern-day retail and community service. Ligtenberg also brings a lifetime of experience in community and non-profit board service. She currently serves as Board Treasurer for Western National Park Association and is a member of Seattle’s Associated Recreation Council Board of Directors.
“I am honored and humbled to join the talented team and Council of the PDA, and numerous partner organizations, as we steward this remarkable local and global icon into its bright future. I have a deep commitment to preserving the Market’s rich history while finding new and innovative ways to engage our diverse local community and the thousands of visitors from around the world. I look forward to spending my first few months actively listening and learning before turning my attention to activating our recently adopted and inspiring Master Plan.”
PDA Council Chair Devin McComb said “Ligtenberg’s strong professional record of delivering business growth while fostering healthy, purpose-driven organizational cultures made her the best choice to lead the Market. We were impressed with Rachel’s passion for supporting small businesses, and fostering community,” McComb said. “We’re excited for our community to get to know and work alongside Rachel in service to the Market.”
Vision for the Future
As Executive Director, Ligtenberg will oversee operations, management, financial health and strategic planning for Pike Place Market. In this role, she is tasked with ensuring that the Market continues to thrive as a vibrant hub for local farmers, artisans, and small businesses, while also serving as a supportive community for its five social services and residents, many of whom are low-income seniors. Additionally, she will uphold the Market’s legacy as a cultural and historical beacon in the heart of Seattle. With her track record of community engagement and strategic leadership, Ligtenberg is well-positioned to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Ligtenberg’s appointment comes at a pivotal time, as Pike Place Market embarks on the implementation of its Master Plan, which includes new strategies for engaging the community, supporting local businesses, and ensuring the Market remains a vibrant destination for generations to come.
A Local Leader with National Reach
Though the PDA’s search spanned the nation, Ligtenberg’s deep connection to Seattle and her commitment to community made her a standout candidate. Her first visit to the Market in the 1990s sparked a lasting love for the community, which deepened when she moved to Seattle in 2001. “Since that first visit, I have been in awe of the Market’s rich history and unique and virtuous ecosystem,” she shared. “What a privilege to partner with the community and guide its future.”
Ligtenberg’s leadership, centered on purpose, inclusion, and community, promises to bring a renewed energy to the Market’s storied tradition of supporting small businesses, fostering local talent, and welcoming millions of visitors each year.
