Following the once-in-a-lifetime excitement of the FIFA World Cup, Seattleites are looking for ways to hold onto the sense of connection and community that united the city. For weeks, people gathered to cheer, laugh, dance, and celebrate the world’s most popular sport, creating an energy many described as unlike anything Seattle had experienced before.

What many may not realize is that this spirit of community thrives at Pike Place Market each and every day.

The cheers of elated soccer fans throughout the tournament aren’t all that different from the excitement that surrounds a successful fish toss, and chants of fans echo the calls of Market fishmongers. Just as the World Cup brought together people from different cultures and backgrounds, the Market has long served as a place where locals and visitors alike come together to share food, music, and experiences. From talented buskers performing on street corners and stairwells to friends, families, and even strangers gathering over a meal, the Market has always been a cornerstone of community.

Since its inception in 1907, Pike Place Market has been Seattle’s gathering place. Throughout the World Cup, that role was on full display as thousands of soccer fans explored the historic district before and after matches, spent their days off wandering the Market, and gathered for team celebrations and pre-match festivities.

During the tournament, the Market became an even greater crossroads of cultures, languages, and traditions from around the globe. International visitors experienced the best of the Pacific Northwest through fresh seafood, local produce, handcrafted goods, and Market eateries representing just about every corner of the world. That spirit of exploration and cultural exchange has always been central to the Market’s identity. As one of the nation’s longest-running public markets, Pike Place Market continues to honor its legacy by bringing people together through shared experiences.

From our more than 500 small businesses to our residents, vendors, buskers, and even our social services, everyone played a role in creating an atmosphere of joy and inclusion. We were honored to help showcase Seattle and provide a place where people from across the globe could come together and feel at home.”

From opening day through Seattle’s final World Cup hosted match, Pike Place Market welcomed more than 650,000 visitors, with guests spending nearly an hour on average exploring the Market. More than 25,000 soccer fans and Seattleites packed the cobblestones and MarketFront for the Market’s first-ever summer Night Market, enjoying international food, handcrafted goods, live music, and stunning waterfront views.

The fun continued the following day during Live! Match Day at the Market, where hundreds of fans gathered to watch the game while enjoying bites from Market eateries, beverages through the Sip & Savor program, and shopping opportunities at hundreds of independent businesses.

Now, Pike Place Market is keeping that momentum alive with a new monthly after-hours music and arts series. The Night Shift debuts Friday, July 24, from 3 to 9 pm, transforming the Market into an evening destination filled with live music, art demonstrations, shopping, a beer garden, extended business hours, and more. This event coincides with the Downtown Seattle Art Walk, encouraging locals to explore the downtown core by perusing art galleries and checking out new storefronts throughout the neighborhood. The Night Shift will take place the last Friday of the month through October, keeping the sublime vibes of Seattle summers alive by activating our historic and iconic location.

The World Cup may be over, but the spirit that electrified Seattle lives on at Pike Place Market.
