A New Season at Pike Place Market: What to Know About Fall and Winter Street Access

As the summer crowds fade and the weather starts to change, Pike Place Market is preparing for its own seasonal transition.

Every year, the way people use the Market changes with the seasons. Summer brings millions of visitors, packed sidewalks, and some of the highest pedestrian volumes of the year. However, fall and winter look different — business owners, delivery drivers, emergency vehicles, residents, and visitors continue to rely on Pike Place, the main street running through the Market, yet traffic patterns change as the busy season winds down.

To reflect these changes, Pike Place Market is launching the next phase of its street management plan on October 1, 2026, and a new online Street Access Resource Hub designed to make navigating the Market easier than ever.

Pike Place Market is far more than a tourist destination. 363 days a year, the Market serves as a workplace, community and gathering place, access to social services, and a central location for entertainment of all kinds.

Farmers unload fresh produce in the quiet morning hours, businesses receive deliveries, residents come and go from their homes, customers pick up their groceries, social service providers support community members in need, and at the same time, millions of people visit each year to experience one of Seattle’s most iconic destinations.

With so many people relying on Pike Place in different ways, managing access requires a thoughtful and strategic balance. Collaboration among the Pike Place Market PDA, Seattle Department of Transportation, and the Market Historical Commission has helped create a seasonal approach to street access reflected in the next phase of the street management plan.

Beginning October 1, 2026, Pike Place will move into its fall and winter operating schedule.

From Monday through Thursday, the street will remain open to both vehicles and pedestrians, with drivers required to yield to people walking.

On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., vehicle access will be limited to authorized vehicles, including deliveries, loading activities, ADA access, emergency vehicles, and pre-arranged customer pickups.

The schedule reflects seasonal visitor patterns while continuing to prioritize safety during the busiest shopping periods.

Several of the Market’s most popular events will also bring temporary vehicle-free days to Pike Place this fall and winter.

Visitors attending The Night Shift: Día de los Muertos, Magic in the Market, Figgy Pudding, or Valentine’s Day events can expect a more pedestrian-focused experience as thousands of people gather to celebrate throughout the historic district.

These special event closures help create a more seamless and enjoyable environment during some of the Market’s most highly attended days.
