A New Connection to Seattle's Waterfront

Seattle is set to experience an exciting new transformation with the opening of the Overlook Walk, a pedestrian connection bridging two of the city’s most beloved landmarks—Pike Place Market and the Seattle Waterfront. On October 4, Pike Place Market will celebrate this momentous occasion with an event featuring local music, art, and small business highlights, all in the vibrant spirit of the Market.

A New Gateway to Seattle's Cultural Heart

The Overlook Walk creates a seamless link between downtown Seattle, the iconic Pike Place Market, and the newly revitalized Waterfront Park. This elevated pathway, located where the Alaskan Way Viaduct once stood, offers more than just a scenic route. It provides visitors with a direct and pedestrian-friendly connection between the historic Market and the waterfront, which boasts stunning views of Elliott Bay, Mount Rainier, and the Olympic Mountains.

The collaboration between Pike Place Market and the City of Seattle has been years in the making, following the completion of MarketFront and the expansion of Pike Place Market in 2017.

The Overlook Walk builds on this successful partnership, ensuring that Seattleites and visitors alike can easily access two of the city’s defining spaces—each a hub for culture, food, and community.

A Celebration of Local Culture

The grand opening on October 4 will be a day to remember, with a lively celebration from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Pike Place Market’s MarketFront. Attendees can expect live music performances from some of the Market’s favorite buskers, including Travelin’ Miles, Bob Goldstick, and Carly Ann Calbero, who will provide the soundtrack to this historic moment.

In addition to music, visitors will get the opportunity to experience live craft demonstrations from Market artisans, such as Ritu Tilwani of Dot & Dimension showcasing linocut printmaking, and Chris Scamehorn of CMS Ceramics demonstrating his pottery skills. These local artists embody the spirit of Pike Place Market, where creativity and craftsmanship are central to the shopping experience.

A New Chapter for Pike Place Market and the Waterfront

The Overlook Walk is more than just an urban pathway—it’s a symbol of connection. It bridges Seattle’s past and future by uniting Pike Place Market, which has been the soul of the city for over a century, with the reimagined Waterfront Park, a civic project set to become one of Seattle’s newest landmarks. The walk will provide visitors with expansive 360-degree views of downtown Seattle, the waterfront, and beyond.

As part of the Market’s ongoing mission to support local businesses, this new connection will bring more foot traffic to the area, benefitting the 500 small businesses, farmers, and artisans that thrive within Pike Place Market. The ease of movement between downtown, the Market, and the waterfront will enhance the visitor experience and allow more people to engage with Seattle’s rich cultural offerings.

Looking Ahead

While the Overlook Walk is opening this October, the broader transformation of the Seattle waterfront will continue through 2025, with the development of additional green spaces, seating areas, and local concessions that showcase the city’s commitment to fostering community-oriented public spaces. Once complete, the park will offer an accessible, vibrant environment for Seattleites and visitors to enjoy year-round.
