Week Long Power Outages in Soames-Dunn and Economy Buildings Went Well

Phase III renovation work continues to progress smoothly. Power was out in both the Soames-Dunn and the Economy Buildings for a week each in early January while we completed work necessary for making electrical upgrades to the buildings. The power shutdowns required tenants in each building to close for a week, and the buildings reopened on schedule. In the Economy Building, concrete for the basement floor has been poured and framing has been completed for the northern wall of the Market Theatre. Glass has been installed on the new Economy Atrium elevator and scaffolding around the elevator removed. Excavation work necessary for plumbing work in the Soames-Dunn has taken place, with plumbing and electrical rough-ins complete for the building’s new restrooms. Work on the Stewart House is progressing, with scaffolding now in place on the Stewart Street side of the building. Additional work was needed on the building’s connection to the canopy.

Scaffolding in Place in Front of Economy Building

In our last issue, we reported that scaffolding would begin to go around the east side of the Economy Building on January 3 for work being done on the canopy of the building. The installation was delayed until January 12 while we waited for a permit from the City. The scaffolding is now in place on First Avenue in front of the building, up to and past First & Pike News. The photo below shows the scaffolding being installed.. Work is being done on the building’s canopy located above the First Avenue sidewalk and on the building’s new roof. Some structural replacements on the canopy are taking place. Shoppers will be able to walk under the scaffolding, so building and business access will not be affected. We expect the scaffolding to remain in place for approximately two months, while exterior work is completed on the building.

Renovation Public Meeting on March 20

We’ll do a wrap-up of renovation work at the next joint public renovation meeting with the Constituency. The meeting will be on March 20 starting at 6:00 p.m. in the PDA Conference Room. If you have renovation questions in the meantime, please send them to renovation@pikeplacemarket.org.

Phase III Work Nearing Completion

While work continues in the Economy Building, Soames-Dunn Building, and Stewart House, many renovation projects are close to winding up. Substantial completion of Phase III work is set for mid-March.
